Practicing GODliness Series - Message 4 - Humility

Study Questions:

1. The Lord Jesus Christ is by far the greatest example of someone who practiced humility. Discover the extent of His humility by looking up the following Scripture passages and then writing a brief summary of how He displayed humility: Matthew 11:28-30; 20:28; Luke 2:7; 2:51; John 13:1-5; Philippians 2:5-8

2. In the following verses, what promises does God make to those who are truly humble? Which one of these promises is most meaningful to you? Isaiah 57:15; 66:1-2; James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:6

3. Humility before God is essential to humility in any other relationship. How did each of the following men express his humility before the infinitely holy and majestic God? Moses (Exodus 34:5-8), Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-5), John (Revelation 1:12-17). How can you cultivate a biblical attitude of humility before God?

4. Another basic area of humility is our attitude toward the Scriptures. What insights are revealed in passages such as 2 Kings 22:11-13 and Luke 10:21 about an attitude of humility toward God’s revealed truth? Meditating further on these passages, what fundamental attitude do you need to acquire if you are to live and act confidently in your understanding of God and His will as revealed in the Bible? What differences would it make if you really put this attitude into practice?

5. Look up the following passages, and then describe what frame of mind you need to properly evaluate your salvation, abilities, and attainments. 1 Corinthians 3:7; 4:7; 15:10; 1 Timothy 1:15

6. Consider the admonitions of Paul and Peter concerning humility toward fellow believers (see Ephesians 5:21; 1 Peter 5:5). How do you think we should express such humility toward one another today? How did Apollos and Peter express humility toward other believers? (See Acts 18:24-28; Galatians 2:11-15; 2 Peter 3:15.)

7. Read John 13:1-17, and then describe what Jesus reveals about Himself in the passage. How can you model a similar attitude in your own life this week?

8. Consider the basic attitude of humility toward others that is emphasized in Luke 14:7-11, Romans 12:10, and Philippians 2:3-4. Describe three or four situations in which you were tempted to act in a self-centered way instead of putting others before yourself.

9. What do you consider to be the most meaningful area of humility discussed in the message ? What might you do in order to grow in that area?
